Christmas often becomes a whirlwind of shopping, parties, and decorations. Amid all the excitement, it’s easy to lose sight of the actual reason for the season: celebrating Jesus.
This post offers practical ideas to help you keep Christ at the center of your Christmas celebrations, making the holiday more meaningful for you and your loved ones.
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." (Matthew 6:19-21 ESV).

Start with a Christ-Centered Advent
Advent is a season of preparation leading up to Christmas. Instead of focusing only on gifts or parties, use this time to reflect on the story of Jesus’ birth and its significance.
Daily Scripture Readings: Choose passages from the Bible that tell the Christmas story or highlight Jesus’ teachings. Read them together as a family or in a small group.
Advent Devotionals: Use devotionals designed for Advent to guide your thoughts and prayers. Many include reflections, prayers, and activities.
Advent Calendar with a Twist: Instead of candy or toys, fill each day’s window with a verse, a prayer, or a simple act of kindness. This approach helps everyone focus on the spiritual meaning of Christmas and builds anticipation for celebrating Jesus’ birth. Also, keep in mind that while Advent is leading up to the birth of Christ, anytime is a good time to try these devotionals.

Here are a few Advent Devotionals for you to try:
Create Meaningful Traditions
Traditions shape how we experience holidays. Adding Christ-focused customs can deepen your family’s connection to God and the season. These traditions remind everyone why Christmas matters beyond the commercial aspects. Have fun and create traditions that are special to you and your family.
Nativity Displays: Set up a nativity scene in your home and involve children in placing the figures. Share the story behind each character as you do.
Christmas Carols with a Message: Sing carols that tell the story of Jesus’ birth. Consider learning new songs that emphasize His life and teachings.
"Addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart," (Ephesians 5:19 ESV).

Gift Giving with Purpose: Reflect Jesus’ generosity by giving gifts that have meaning. For example, consider donating to a charity in someone’s name or providing handmade gifts that show thoughtfulness.
Read the Christmas Story on Christmas Morning: Before opening presents and starting your Christmas celebrations, take a moment to read the story of Christ's birth to your family, allowing each person to take a turn reading if they desire.
Visit a living nativity: Visiting a live nativity is an exciting and visual way for your family to learn about the birth of Christ. Our church is hosting a live nativity this year, featuring camels, wise men, Mary, Joseph, and the baby Jesus. Look for a church in your area that may be hosting a live nativity. Your children will love this experience!
Watch Christ-Centered Christmas Movies: Watching Christmas movies is a tradition in many families. This year, look for Christmas movies that focus on Christ. Movies such as The Nativity Story, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, and A Charlie Brown Christmas are all entertaining and convey a message about the true meaning of Christmas.

Attend a Christmas Eve Service: Many churches hold special Christmas Eve services. These services are a great way to connect with other believers and celebrate Christ during the Christmas season.
Bake Christmas Cookies: Christmas cookies are among the most popular treats baked during the Christmas season. This year, instead of (or in addition to) Santa, elf, and reindeer cookies, bake cookies about the birth of Christ. Look for cookie cutters with Christian themes, such as the baby Jesus, the manger scene, and the Three Wise Men. You could even bake the entire Nativity Scene with your family.

Serve Others in Jesus’ Name
"As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace:" (1 Peter 4:10 ESV).
Jesus taught love and service. Incorporating acts of kindness into your Christmas plans honors His example. As Christians, we are called to serve others throughout the year, and it is especially essential around Christmas.
Serving others shifts the focus from receiving to giving, echoing the heart of Jesus’ message. Let this Christmas season and those to follow be more about the act of giving than receiving. Find opportunities to serve and spread His message.
Volunteer Opportunities: Find local shelters, food banks, or community centers where you can volunteer as a family or group. Volunteering can take many forms and can be practiced at any time throughout the year. One meaningful Christmas volunteer opportunity is to serve at a local soup kitchen or homeless shelter. Showing your children the importance of giving and serving, especially during the Christmas season, is one of the most valuable gifts you can provide for them.

Care Packages: Assemble and deliver care packages for those in need. Include essentials like warm socks, snacks, and encouraging notes.
Invite Someone New: Open your home to someone who might be alone during the holidays. Sharing a meal and fellowship reflects Christ’s love.
Shop from the Samaritan’s Purse Holiday Catalog: Samaritan's Purse has been helping provide for victims of war, poverty, famine, and more since 1970. Here is their mission statement:
"Samaritan’s Purse is a nondenominational evangelical Christian organization providing spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world. Since 1970, Samaritan’s Purse has helped meet needs of people who are victims of war, poverty, natural disasters, disease, and famine with the purpose of sharing God’s love through His Son, Jesus Christ. The organization serves the Church worldwide to promote the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ." (Samaritan's Purse, 2025).

Build a Shoe Box: Besides their impressive Christmas catalog, Samaritan's Purse also created Operation Christmas Child, which offers people the opportunity to build a shoe box filled with Christmas goodies for impoverished Children around the world. My husband and I do this every year, and it's a fantastic way to help a child celebrate the Christmas season. I encourage you to let this become a meaningful family tradition for you and your family each year.

Reflect Through Prayer and Worship
Make space for quiet moments that invite reflection on Jesus’ life and purpose.
Christmas Eve or Day Worship: Attend a church service that celebrates the birth of Christ. Many churches offer candlelight services that create a peaceful atmosphere.
Personal Prayer Time: Set aside time for individual or family prayer, thanking Jesus for His gift and asking for guidance in the coming year.
Journaling: Encourage writing down thoughts, prayers, or reflections about what Jesus means to you during this season.
Meditate on Key Biblical Passages: Look for passages that reflect the birth of Christ and take the time to truly consider the gift of His birth to all of humanity. You can find many of these passages at: https://www.openbible.info/topics/the_birth_of_christ
"For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." (Isaiah 9:6 ESV).
These practices help deepen your spiritual experience and keep Christ at the center of your heart. Let your personal time and family time reflect the reason for the season, Jesus Christ.

Use Decorations That Tell the Story
Decorations can do more than beautify your home; they can teach and remind. Focus your decorations on the birthday boy. These decorations honor Jesus and serve as a reminder of the reason for Christmas.
Scripture Ornaments: Hang ornaments with Bible verses about Jesus’ birth on your tree. Take turns as a family reading each of these verses as you open gifts around the tree.
Symbolic Colors: Use colors like white for His purity, red for Jesus’ sacrifice, blue representing hope, and gold for His kingship.
DIY Crafts: Create decorations that depict the nativity or other biblical scenes. This can be a fun activity for both children and adults.
Decorating with intention helps keep the focus on Jesus throughout the season. Visual cues are potent reminders that help to keep our minds and hearts on Christ.

Share the Story with Others
We are called to share the message of Christ as often as possible with as many people as we can. Sharing the story of the birth of Christ spreads the joy and hope that Jesus brings. It enables us to connect with others and share the biblical message of Christmas with fellow Christians and others in our communities.
Christmas Cards with a Message: Include a favorite Bible verse or a personal note about what Jesus means to you.
"And he said to them, 'Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation." (Mark 16:15 ESV).
Host a Christmas Story Night: Invite people to hear the nativity story, sing carols, and enjoy fellowship.
"The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all." (2 Corinthians 13:14 ESV).
Social Media Sharing: Social media can be a powerful means of sharing the message of Jesus Christ. Post reflections, scriptures, or photos that encourage and highlight the true meaning of Christmas. This practice can be done year-round to lift others and provide hope through His Word.
In Conclusion
Christmas used to be a time for people to slow down and celebrate our Lord with family, friends, and neighbors. Over the years, the meaning of Christmas has become lost in the frantic preparations and gift-buying of the Christmas season.
"And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth," (Luke 1:14 ESV).
This Christmas, and those that follow, allow yourself and your family to slow down and celebrate the gift of love, peace, and hope found only through Jesus Christ.
Although I was a little late posting this article, please keep in mind that these ideas are useful year-round for keeping your mind focused on Christ. Celebrating Christ, not just Christmas, will make the entire year more joyful and meaningful for you and your family.
