Understand What Purpose Means to You
Purpose is not a one-size-fits-all concept; rather, it is a profoundly personal and multifaceted idea that varies significantly from individual to individual.
"Life purpose is the guiding force that gives your existence meaning, direction, and fulfillment. It’s the deeper reason behind your actions, goals, and aspirations—the thing that inspires you to grow, contribute, and live with intention." (Kay, 2025).
For some people, purpose manifests as the pursuit of a career that aligns seamlessly with their passions, where they find joy and fulfillment in their daily work. This could involve engaging in creative endeavors, such as writing, art, or music, or it might pertain to fields like healthcare, education, or technology, where they feel they can make a meaningful impact. The alignment of career with personal interests often leads to a sense of satisfaction and a drive that propels individuals to excel in their chosen paths.
On the other hand, for others, the essence of purpose may lie in cultivating strong, meaningful relationships with family, friends, and colleagues. These individuals may find that their sense of fulfillment comes from nurturing connections, providing support to loved ones, and creating a network of trust and companionship. This relational aspect of purpose emphasizes the importance of community and the emotional bonds that enrich our lives, suggesting that for some, the act of being present and supportive for others is what gives their life direction and significance.
Some people derive their sense of purpose from a commitment to contributing to their community or society as a whole. This can take many forms, including volunteering, activism, or engaging in social justice initiatives. For these individuals, purpose is often intertwined with the desire to effect positive change, whether that means addressing local issues, advocating for global causes, or simply helping those in need. Their actions are driven by a sense of responsibility and a belief in the collective good, underscoring the idea that purpose can extend beyond the self to encompass a broader social impact.
Our purpose and our journey to discover it are unique to each one of us. One of the reasons for writing this article is my desire to help. It took me a long time to discover my purpose, and I want to help others find theirs as well.
"People who report having a sense of purpose have greater satisfaction at work, financial success, and overall life satisfaction. Purpose is linked with a stronger sense of identity and improved mental health." (Ahmed, 2025).
After many years of managing hotels, I was one day confronted with the harsh reality that I no longer wanted to be in the industry. This job was not my purpose, and it left me little time for joy. In fact, the job was mentally and physically exhausting me to the point where my health began to suffer.
One day, after a particularly stressful meeting, I just walked out to my car, called my husband, and told him I didn't want to do this work anymore. I felt as though it was sucking the life out of me. My husband, being the blessing he is, said, "Then don't. Just come home."
I am certainly not encouraging anyone to walk away from their job without a plan. (Trust me, a plan would have been a better way for me to leave, and it would have been much less stressful and scary.) However, I do believe that sometimes we must make plans to walk away from jobs, habits, places, or even people who are draining the joy from our lives.
After much soul-searching, conversations with God, and asking myself some profound questions, I knew my purpose with absolute certainty. My purpose has always been, and remains, to help others. Helping others has always been my calling and a source of joy for me.
Once I realized I needed to do work that helped others, I set out to find ways to live with intention and purpose.

Firstly, I needed a job since I had just cut our income in half by leaving my previous one. As I reviewed job ads, I saw many that I was qualified for, but only a few that would bring me joy and allow me to live my purpose. I set out to apply only for those jobs and was soon working as an Activities Assistant in the Memory Care Department at a local assisted living facility.
I can still remember my first day there. My heart sang with joy as I began befriending and working with the elderly in my care. I felt instantly at home and derived great satisfaction and enjoyment from my work there, knowing this was what was meant by living your purpose. I worked there for several years and now work in the Emergency Department of a local hospital. This was my calling, and each day I feel blessed to have a job where I can work with people and help them in any way I can.

With my new career choice aligned with my purpose, I began exploring ways to combine my deeply ingrained desire to help others with another of my passions: writing.
I had experienced some severe health hardships through knee injuries, osteoarthritis, and Type II Diabetes. I struggled to find resources to help me better understand these health issues and ways to resolve or improve them, so I began researching what I could to improve my health.
From there, I realized it was essential for me to help others discover health resources that enable them to live their best lives, and Blissful-Health.org was born.
Soon, driven by my desire to help both myself and others strengthen their faith, I created Blissful-Faith.org.
I do not doubt that these two websites, my charity and volunteer work, along with my actual hands-on work at the hospital, are me living my divine purpose. I find joy in these things every single day, where before, there was little joy in the work I was doing.

So, how can you get started learning about yourself and discover what brings you joy in life?
A first step in this journey of self-discovery is to engage in a process of self-reflection and introspection. Reflecting will help you to define what purpose means to you personally.
Looking deep within yourself to understand what you love and what you want to do, as well as the difference you want to make in this world, requires a lot of soul searching and asking yourself some critical questions. Let's explore some ideas to help with your soul searching.
Questions & Reflections
Sometimes understanding ourselves is not immediately apparent. Asking ourselves critical questions may often reveal our true character and true desires for our lives. This frequently begins with reflecting on our life thus far.

Here are some ideas for reflection:
Assess Your Current Life: Take a good look at your life. What is working well? What is not? What makes you truly happy in the life you are living? What does not? Take notes of your answers and examine ways you can improve or change the areas where you are unhappy.
Consider Your Values: Reflect on what makes you who you are. What is important to you? What are your moral and ethical beliefs? These are not values you like, but things that you are unwilling to compromise on. Our values are deeply ingrained within us, so take time to uncover the values that are important to you. If you notice you are not living by your values, reflect on ways you might make changes so you are living by those values.
Examine Your Goals: Consider whether your goals align with what you hope to achieve based on your interests and loves. For example, if your goal is to secure a promotion at work, it may be worth considering whether you want to continue down your current career path or explore a new career that aligns more closely with your lifelong aspirations. Aligning your goals with your purpose will inspire you to work diligently to achieve your objectives.
Here are some Critical Questions to help you discover your purpose:
What are my passions?
Identifying what you are passionate about is a crucial first step in discovering your purpose. Consider the activities that make you lose track of time or the subjects that ignite a fire within you. Reflect on moments in your life when you felt the most alive and engaged. What themes or interests consistently emerge? Understanding your passions can provide significant insight into your purpose.
What are my strengths and talents?
Everyone has unique abilities and skills that they bring to the table. Take time to assess what you excel at, whether it’s problem-solving, creativity, leadership, or empathy. Ask friends, family, or colleagues for their perspective on your strengths. Recognizing your talents not only boosts your confidence but also helps you see how you can use them to contribute meaningfully to the world around you.

What values do I hold dear?
Your values are the guiding principles that shape your decisions and behavior. Consider what is most important to you in life—integrity, compassion, adventure, knowledge, or community, for example. Reflecting on your values can help you align your actions with your beliefs, making it easier to identify a purpose that resonates with your true self.
What impact do I want to have on the world?
Think about the legacy you wish to leave behind. What kind of difference do you want to make in the lives of others, in your community, or in the world? This question encourages you to consider the broader implications of your actions and how they contribute to the greater good. Your desire to create a positive impact can be a powerful motivator in defining your purpose.
What challenges have I overcome?
Reflect on the obstacles you have faced in your life and how you have navigated through them. What lessons have you learned from these experiences? Often, our struggles can reveal our resilience and provide insight into our purpose. By understanding how you have grown through adversity, you can gain clarity on what drives you and how you can help others facing similar challenges.
What makes me feel joyful and fulfilled?
Consider the moments in your life when you felt a sense of fulfillment or satisfaction. What were you doing at that time? Were you helping others, creating something, teaching someone, or perhaps learning? Identifying these moments can help you pinpoint activities that align with your purpose and bring you joy.

Who inspires me and why?
Think about the individuals you admire and look up to. What qualities do they possess that resonate with you? Understanding who inspires you can shed light on the values and aspirations you hold dear, guiding you toward a purpose that aligns with those ideals.
What would I do if I knew I could not fail?
This question encourages you to think beyond limitations and societal expectations. If fear of failure were not a factor, what would you pursue? This thought experiment can help you explore your dreams and desires more freely, revealing potential paths toward your purpose that you may have previously dismissed.
As you ponder these questions, take your time to reflect deeply. Please write down your thoughts, revisit them periodically, and allow your understanding of your purpose to evolve. This process is not a race; it is a journey that can lead to profound self-discovery and fulfillment.
Once you have a clearer idea of your purpose, it is time for action.

Steps to Fulfill Your Purpose
Set Clear, Meaningful Goals
Purpose grows stronger when you set goals that connect with your values and passions. Goals give direction and help you measure progress.
Break down big dreams into smaller, achievable steps.
Set specific and time-bound goals, such as "Write one chapter of my book each month."
Review and adjust goals regularly to stay aligned with your evolving purpose.
Don't forget to use the SMART goal technique to create your goals.
Setting SMART goals enables you to create specific objectives tailored to your particular purpose.
Make them measurable so that you can determine what is working and what is not, and in turn, measurable goals become more successful and attainable.
Keeping them realistic is essential. For example, I admire those who go on missions all over the world to help those in need, but the reality for me is that I need to be home, earning a paycheck, while achieving my goals. So, I contribute to their missions through donations or volunteer work, making my goal of being helpful a reality without forming unrealistic expectations of myself.
And lastly, be sure to set reasonable time frames for achieving your goals. Creating time-bound goals helps you stay motivated to reach the finish line and see the completion of your goal.

Embrace Self-Discovery Practices
Self-discovery is an ongoing process that deepens your understanding of who you are. It involves exploring your thoughts, feelings, and experiences without judgment.
Practice mindfulness or meditation to connect with your inner voice.
Keep a daily journal to track insights and emotions.
Seek feedback from trusted people who know you well.
These practices help you identify what feels authentic and what may be influenced by external expectations.
Take Action and Reflect Regularly
Living your purpose requires action. Start with small steps that align with your goals and values. Taking action builds confidence and reveals new opportunities.
Volunteer for causes that resonate with you.
Join groups or communities that share your interests.
Experiment with projects or roles that challenge you.
Explore new educational opportunities.
After each step, reflect on what you learned. Did it feel meaningful? What would you change? Reflection and adaptability keep you on a purposeful path and prevent burnout.

Overcome Common Obstacles
Many people face doubts, fear, or external pressures when searching for purpose. Recognize these challenges and develop strategies to overcome them.
Fear of failure: View mistakes as learning opportunities.
Pressure to conform: Prioritize your own values over others’ expectations.
Lack of clarity: Break down the process into manageable steps and seek support.
Remember, discovering your purpose is a journey, not a race. Patience and persistence are key.
Build a Supportive Environment
Surround yourself with people who encourage your growth and respect your journey. A supportive environment nurtures your purpose.
Connect with mentors or coaches.
Join groups with shared interests or goals.
Share your journey with friends who listen without judgment.
Support helps you stay motivated and gain new perspectives.

Final Thoughts
It is important to remember that each of us was born for a purpose. Often, life misdirects us into what is easiest or most necessary at the moment, and that is okay, but happiness is found in finding and fulfilling our purpose. Our purpose is where we were made to be and where we will find joy, satisfaction, and clarity.
This journey will be unique for each of us and will require both time and introspection. It is essential to understand what is right for us and develop a plan of action before making significant life changes.
Not everyone has the option to leave their job to explore other ones, and that is okay. The work we do for a living is only one aspect of our lives. Sometimes our purpose is not necessarily in the work we do for a living, but in the interests and activities we pursue outside of our daily work responsibilities. Soul search for "doable" ways to live your purpose. As always, you will find more ideas in our Links Section at the end of this article.
I hope that by following the above steps, you will begin to understand the "real" you and discover your authentic purpose. I also hope you will feel encouraged and confident to make changes that bring you closer to that purpose. From there, I hope you will find the peace and clarity that comes from living your life aligned with your unique purpose.
