Finding True Rest: A Devotional on Matthew 11:28

Rest is something many seek but often find difficult to find. Life’s demands, worries, and pressures often leave us exhausted, searching for relief in fleeting distractions or chasing material things. Yet, the Bible offers a profound promise of rest that goes beyond physical relaxation or the short-lived joy of more things.

Matthew 11:28 invites us to discover a source of rest that refreshes the soul and renews the spirit.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” – Matthew 11:28

This verse is a beacon of hope for anyone feeling overwhelmed. It points us to Jesus and the Word of God as the true source of rest. This devotional explores what this rest means, how we can experience it, and why it matters deeply in our daily lives.

Understanding the Rest Jesus Offers

The rest Jesus promises is not just about taking a break from work or stress. It is a deeper, spiritual rest that addresses the weariness of the heart and mind. Many people try to find rest through vacations, hobbies, or entertainment, but these often provide only temporary relief.

I know I've planned many vacations and looked forward to the rest I thought I would get, only to come back home more exhausted than before I left. We often seek rest in things that do not nourish us or give us deep rest within our souls. There is nothing wrong with a good vacation now and again, but when we expect too much from the vacation, like true rest, we are often left disappointed.

In seeking true rest, we must seek out God and His word, where the soul can find peace and fulfillment. This rest that Jesus offers invites individuals to lay down their burdens and surrender their worries, allowing for a transformative experience that revitalizes the spirit. It is a call to trust in a higher power, to relinquish control, and to embrace a sense of belonging and acceptance that is often elusive in our fast-paced lives. Unlike the fleeting enjoyment derived from a weekend getaway or a favorite pastime, this spiritual rest provides a lasting sense of calm and assurance that can permeate every aspect of life.

How do you feel after you pray or meditate on Scripture? I know, for me, I feel calm and less pressured than I did before I started praying. Resting in Jesus invites moments of stillness and contemplation, where one can engage in prayer, meditation, or simply quiet reflection. In these moments, the noise of the world fades away, allowing the heart and mind to align with a sense of purpose and clarity. As people begin to experience this spiritual rest, they often find that their perspectives shift, enabling them to approach challenges with renewed strength and resilience. The more we pray, the more our hearts, bodies, and minds become renewed and refreshed.

Ultimately, the rest Jesus promises is not merely an escape from the demands of life; it is an invitation to a transformative journey that nurtures the soul and restores the spirit. It is about finding peace in the chaos, joy in the mundane, and hope in the despair. This rest becomes a source of strength, enabling individuals to navigate the complexities of life with grace and confidence, reminding them that they are not alone in their struggles and that there is always a path to renewal and restoration.

Jesus calls those who are “weary and burdened” to come to Him. This weariness can be physical, emotional, or spiritual. It includes the weight of guilt, anxiety, fear, and the pressures of life. The rest He offers is a release from these burdens, a peace that calms the soul even amid challenges.

How to Experience This Rest Daily

This rest is available to everyone who comes to Jesus with an open heart. It is a gift of grace, not something earned by effort or achievement. When we accept this invitation, we enter into a relationship with Him that transforms how we live and cope with life’s difficulties.

Experiencing the profound rest that Jesus offers indeed requires intentional steps and a conscious effort on our part. This rest is not something that occurs without our involvement; rather, it is a process that unfolds and deepens as we actively seek to draw closer to Him in our daily lives. spiritual rest that renews the heart and soul, offering stability and peace that enduresHe seeks a relationship with us, and as we grow closer, we find comfort and rest that only He can provide.

The journey toward this spiritual rest is enriched by various practices and habits that cultivate a deeper relationship with Christ. Here are some practical and meaningful ways to embrace this rest in everyday life:

1. Daily Prayer and Meditation

Spending time with Jesus and in His word helps us to find peace and rest. The Bible is filled with wisdom, and it is our job to put this wisdom into practice to lead our best lives. Through prayer and meditation on Scripture, I often find a calm and peace I cannot find anywhere else. Spending time with God not only brings peace but also helps me to align my thoughts and actions with His will.

2. Engaging with Scripture

The Scriptures provide insights into His character, His love for us, and the peace He promises. By immersing ourselves in His Word, we can find comfort and reassurance in times of stress or uncertainty. When I feel stressed, I take the time to read His word. There, I find answers and guidance. His word helps me to slow down and thoughtfully consider my worries or stresses, finding solutions to solve many of these issues. The Bible is filled with wisdom. It teaches us values and attributes such as patience, love, charity, stillness, kindness, strength, and so much more. Consider setting a specific time each day to read passages on rest, such as:

"You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you." (Isaiah 26:3 NIV).

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28 NIV).

3. Practicing Gratitude

Gratitude is a powerful practice that can transform our perspective and help us to recognize the blessings in our lives. By intentionally reflecting on what we are thankful for, we can shift our focus from anxiety and worry to appreciation and joy. Anyone who knows me knows that I am HUGE on gratitude. For me, constant gratitude is not only my way of thanking God for all I have and for all He has done, but also helps me to find joy in every little thing around me. When I think about wanting more than I have, I always stop to reflect on what I do have—simple things like water, a home, love, family, friends, and food. God provides what we need, and I have learned to be grateful for everything He provides, from the birds outside my window to the bread in my cupboard. Gratitude helps us rest more easily and feel at peace with who God made us to be and the blessings he bestows upon us.

4. Seeking Community

There is something truly special about a group of true brothers and sisters in Christ. The love, support, encouragement, and accountability you find when surrounded by warriors in Christ is like nothing else. True Christians help to keep you grounded, guided by His word, supported in all circumstances, and encourage you to go out and share your God-given talents to help others and spread the word of God. These special humans understand that we are all flawed. So, we work together to help one another overcome the difficulties and challenges of life so we can rest in His perfect peace.

5. Limiting Distractions

Distractions of the world will steal our joy, rest, and peace quicker than anything these days. The constant barrage of negativity, hateful rhetoric, scare tactics, and downright lies weighs heavily on our peace.

Taking intentional steps to limit these distractions, such as setting boundaries around technology or creating a peaceful environment for daily prayer and reflection, can help us focus more on our relationship with Him.

This might look different for everyone, but for me, I limit my time online. Enjoying the things and people I love has taken priority in my life. While I have to be online for certain responsibilities and projects I love (such as my writing for FitandFaithful.org), I also make time to step away from being plugged in. Enjoying my home, time with those I love, time with God, learning something new, and practicing my hobbies have become my priorities. I encourage you to take the time to follow what is most important to you and eliminate the negative distractions of this world.

6. Serving Others

Ironically, one path to finding rest is through serving others. When we step outside of our own worries and extend love and assistance to those in need, we often find a renewed sense of purpose and fulfillment. Serving not only brings joy but also aligns us with the heart of Jesus, who came to serve rather than be served. This act of selflessness can lead to a deeper experience of His peace, as we shift our focus from ourselves to the needs of others. As Christians, we must practice humility and remember the example Jesus was for us, serving others before ourselves and trusting God's will over our own.

7. Embracing Silence and Solitude

Incorporating moments of silence and solitude into our routine can be incredibly restorative. These times allow us to disconnect from the chaos of life and create space for God to speak to us. Whether through a quiet walk in nature, sitting in a peaceful room, or simply taking a few deep breaths, these moments of stillness can help us to recharge and reconnect with the divine source of our rest. I have found silence to be one of the most healing things available. I cherish my silent times when I can sit and observe nature, meditate on scripture, or simply think quietly. Silence is good for our minds and our souls.

Finding True Rest

By intentionally incorporating these practices into our everyday lives, we can cultivate an environment where the rest Jesus offers can flourish. It is a journey that requires commitment and effort, but the rewards of peace, joy, and spiritual fulfillment are well worth the endeavor. As we draw closer to Him, we will find that His rest is not only attainable but transformative. It is beyond any earthly rest we can hope to obtain, and it is available to all.

So, if you need rest, seek God. If you need to refresh and recharge, seek God. Dig deep into the teachings of Jesus and explore what they look like in your life. Make prayer a daily habit to refuel and replenish the calm, rest, and peace the world steals from us.

I hope this devotional was both informational and encouraging. My hope for you is that you grow stronger in your relationship with God, or if you do not know God, that you will give Him the chance to show you how living His word will completely transform your life and give you the restorative rest you are always seeking.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30 NIV).

Let this promise guide you today and every day. Come to Jesus, lay down your burdens, and receive the rest only He can give. Your soul will thank you.
